Road To The Smokies

A Gatlinburg Road Trip Over July 4th

For the Fourth of July weekend, we finally did the thing we'd been talking about since we got the car - a proper road trip. Philadelphia to Sevierville, Tennessee, a long haul south with the highway unspooling in front of us for hours. We didn't mind. After months of small rooms and short walks, the open road felt like its own kind of freedom.

Gatlinburg was the heart of it. We posed in front of the "Welcome to Gatlinburg" bear sculpture like every visitor does, and wandered the main strip with no particular plan. We tried Dragon's Breath ice cream - the kind dipped in liquid nitrogen, so you breathe out smoke like a cartoon dragon. Ridiculous, and worth it.

Ripley's Mirror Maze took up an afternoon. We spent a good while bumping gently into glass, laughing, genuinely lost more than once.

But the Great Smoky Mountains were the part that stayed with us. Green ridges folding into blue haze, the weather clear and mild the whole time - the kind of view that makes you go quiet without deciding to.

And then the story we'll be telling for years: a bear, an actual black bear, ambling right past our Airbnb. We watched from behind the glass, half-thrilled, half-terrified, phones up, hearts going fast. It wandered off like it owned the place, which it probably did.

We drove back tired and sunlit, already the kind of tired that feels like a good weekend.
